The work is dedicated to the technology and the decoration of the Greek handwritten book. It reviews the history of the codex and the studies of the Byzantine and Postbyzantine bindings made by scholars in Bulgaria and abroad. The elements of the binding - text block endlieves, sewing, spine, text block edges, boards, endbands, markers, cover, metal fittings, fastenings are thoroughtly studied in 89 codices form the collection of the Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Dujcev". Analysed are the presence and the specific features of each element, determined is the type of each binding and its date. Presented is the history and the methodology of the studies, dedicated to the leather cover decoration. Considered are the technology of the decoration with tooling and the varios decorative patterns and tools. The decoration of the 89 studied codices is analysed and the 189 tools recorded are categorized. A comparative analysis of the construction and the decoration of the bindings is made in attempt to group the manuscripts with similar characteristics and localize bookbinderies and particular binders. In the appendices are included photographs of the binding elements of each studied codex and all of the tools recorded.
