The thesis is focused on the ceramic assemblages from the latest stages in the development of the Chalcolithic cultures in the Balkans. The analysis is based on data from 35 sites from the modern territories of Bulgaria and Northern Greece. The information from all sites of ascertained or assumed final Chalcolithic habitation has been collected and systematised and the overall regularities concerning site topography, settlement features and intensity of occupation have been outlined. A general classification of the pottery has been designed that is applicable to a comparative study of the separate features of the ceramic complexes in both synchronic and diachronic approach. Steady combinations of the main formal and decorative elements of the pottery have been identified and the emergence, development and spatial distribution of the separate types have been traced out. A series of indicative types and/or elements, specific for the pottery of the period, has been distinguished and their temporal limits have been précised. The common traits in the development and transformation of the ceramic complexes from the end of the Chalcolithic period have been clarified and the main regional and micro-regional peculiarities of the assemblages have been traced out. The analysis at a supra-regional level has allowed the amplification of the main directions of cultural interactions and the intensity of the contacts. A tentative attempt has been made towards précising the internal periodization of the time span from the end of the fifth and the first half of the fourth millennium BC through the definition of four chronological horizons of synchronous or closely related phenomena unified by common typological and stylistic features of the pottery and by the similarity of the associated radiocarbon dates.
