The present PhD thesis has as a subject of study the complex relationship between Church and state in Bulgaria during the first twenty years after the communist coup of 9.IX.1944, with an emphasis on the repressive state policy against Orthodox clergy. The thesis is divided into four chapters, which are determined by the major events in the life of the Orthodox Church in the investigated period. Special attention is paid to the two key figures in the leadership of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church - Exarch Stefan and Patriarch Cyril, as well as to other prominent clergy. This is the first attempt in Bulgarian historiography to comprehend from a theological point of view what happened in the Church during the years of communist terror, and to pay particular attention to victims of the terror among the clergy. Among the stated objectives is also directing the public attention to the memory of the Christian victims (martyrs) and prayer tribute. On the basis of numerous archival documents is revealed the policy and mechanisms of total subjugation and depersonalization of public presence of the Church by the communist authorities. Through various historical testimonies and archival materials is highlighted the huge role played by the leadership of the Communist Party of the USSR in these processes and the attempts of Soviet and Bulgarian state authorities to use the Church and its message to the people for political and propaganda purposes. The final chapter of the dissertation contains three portraits of the clergy of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church killed by the communist authorities and as full as possible for the moment list with the names of more than 220 monks and priest murdered by the communists in the period. Our goal again is to focus public attention on the need for Church canonization and glorification of the martyrs something, which will open up new vital vistas and perspectives in front of Bulgarian Orthodox Church. |
