The dissertation examines EU-US foreign policy and security relations after the Cold war till the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century. The theoretical part introduces and goes into details regarding the definitions of the concepts geopolitical partnership and geopolitical rivalry; it suggests a spectrum of conflict-cooperation interactions between geopolitical actors on the international stage; it suggests a model (successive steps to be followed and criteria to be examined) for verifying if there exists or not geopolitical partnership or rivalry between two international political relations actors. The empirical part studies: 1) what kind of geopolitical actorness and interests EU and USA have; 2) if there is a reason and motivation which could make them geopolitical partners or rivals depending on the extent to which their foreign and security policy interests coincide or diverge; 3) examples of common actions, inaction, inability for common action or individual actions which demonstrate how the potential for partnership or rivalry has been realized. The main conclusions are: EU and USA have intention for partnership relations but the reality shows that geopolitical partnership is difficult to achieve and it occurs rarely. Although their relations do not go into rivalry, there is competition between them. Since in the geopolitical sphere neither of the interaction types prevails, EU and USA cannot be defined as purely geopolitical partners or rivals during the examined period.
