In a series of closely argued chapters Norris draws out the two chief kinds of deficit; normative and causal-explanatory that have characterised much recent work in the analytic line of descent. He pinpoints their source in various failed attempts, after Quine, to make good the promise of a naturalised epistemology that would remedy those defects while not falling prey to the Quinean barrage of sceptical objections.
