Рез. на англ. ез. The dissertation explores the uneasy relationship between history and memory in the newly established museums on communism in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989. The relationship between history and memory in the museum is analyzed on the one hand through the construction and staging of the museum narrative, based on given historical interpretation of the recent past, and on the other hand - through the work of memory carried out in the museum, through the reception and performing of the constructed and staged narrative by the museum visitors. Special attention is paid to the competing and complementary uses of text and image in the museum narrative, supplemented by the performative and multimedial aspects of the museum experience. Based on the academic literature review and the fieldwork conducted, three "ideal types" of strategies for museumifying communism have been identified - "normalizing", "demonizing" and "disneyfying". The institutional, museological and ideologically discursive specifics of the construction of the museum narrative on communism have been analyzed in three specific cases - the Museum of GDR in Berlin, the House of Terror in Budapest, and the Museum of Communism in Prague. The intersections and divergences between the museum narrative and its individual reading, interpretation and acting-out by the visitors have been accounted for based on the comments in the museum guestbooks. The study traces the development of the debate on the communist past in Bulgaria by outlining the decommunization politics carried out "from above" and the various public representations of the communist regime initiated "from below". In this context the "missing" museum of communism in Bulgaria has been problematized as symptomatic for the fragmentation of the mnemonic communities, resulting from the "privatization" and deinstitutionalization of the collective memory of the recent past. |
