The aim of the dissertation is an attempt to define the place of Rhodope Mountains in the history of ancient Thrace. To achieve the stated aim, the main text is arranged in three chapters, examining respectively information about: Rhodope Mountains as a reality in the ancient world. The main accents are put on the available sources, modern state of the researches, spread of the name Rhodope in the ancient world and the ancient concepts about the Mountains. Rhodope Mountains in the political history of ancient Thrace. It is looked the place of the Mountains in the political evants in the Thracian lands from the time of the Trojan War until the end of antiquity. Ancient societies in Rhodope Mountains. It is an attempt to summarize all the available information related to the Mountains' inhabitants in antiquity. Attention is paid to ancient sources about Thracian tribes in Rhodope Mountains, their funerary practices, characteristics of the settlement system, economy and religious life. The five appendices are an integral part of the dissertation. In them are classified the available sources about the history of the Mountains in antiquity, as follows: (A) Rhodope in the ancient literature; (B) Catalogue of the archaeological objects in Rhodope Mountains; (C) Epigraphical monuments from Rhodope Mountains; (D) Roman military diplomas from the territory of Rhodope Mountains; (E) Coin hoard from Rhodope Mountains.
