The periphrasis is one of the means of language by which it achieves the nomination of objects in extra-linguistic reality. It is an alternative of direct naming and it enables participants in communication to denominate persons, objects, and phenomena indirectly by providing description of their distinctive qualities, properties, signs. Confirming the thesis that the selection of a language nomination type is determined by the actual speech situation, the use of periphrasis in linguistic communication is considered not only as a product of language conventions, but also as a pragmatic selections speaking personality, which is achieved within the actual speech act. PhD thesis is based on an analysis of the periphrases in regard to their semantics and their use in the process of communication, using language materials from contemporary Bulgarian and Polish press. Semantic-structural characteristics of the periphrasis result from its capability to complete nominative and expressive functions simultaneously, also from its semantically and syntactically organized entirety. As a denoting phrase the periphrasis is considered for the purposes of denotation and reference, functions of noun phrases into the semantic structure of sentence. As far as the periphrasis reflects the results of categorization and conceptualization of the world and depends one way or another on extra-linguistic factors in the process of communication, it is a means of language nomination by interpretation.
