The Lectionary Gospel Cod. D. gr. 212 from the collection of the Ivan Duichev Center for Slavo Byzantine Studies was completed in 1378 by the scribe Joasaph 2 at the Hodegon monastery in Constantinople. In the 19th C. the codex was rebound and 8 parchment leaves with 12 miniatures from an earlier manuscript (11-12 C.) were added to the book block. The thesis presents the first technological analysis of the Lectionary. This is also the first technical study of a Greek medieval manuscript from Bulgarian collection. The thesis consists of introduction, 5 chapters, conclusions, 5 appendices and list of references. In the first two chapters are reviewed the studies on the technology of the painted decoration in the Greek parchment books for the period 6th-15th C. and the major scientific methods, used for the analysis of the materials and the technique of the medieval manuscripts. The rest of the chapters are dedicated entirely to the study of the Lectionary Cod. D. gr. 212. Summarized is the information about the history and the previous studies of the manuscript. The description of the codex is specified and complemented with new data, images and schemes. With objective scientific methods are determined the animal species used for the parchment and the way it was prepared, the methods for the preliminary sketching of the compositions, the gilding materials and technique and the pigments and the binding media used to make the paint from the two periods. The results of the technical study of the Lectionary Cod. D. gr. 212 are compared with the conclusions from the analysis of other Byzantine manuscripts and with the information from the medieval written sources on book illumination. Revealed are new facts regarding the origin of the earlier miniatures and the relation between them.
