The PhD thesis analyses a group of 58 Latin and bilingual inscriptions from Moesia Inferior, containing the full text or a part of the text of official documents that are legal acts of either the Roman authorities or private persons. The study subjects these texts to epigraphic, linguistic, historic and legal analysis aiming to give a picture of the juridical epigraphy and the mechanisms of applying Roman law in the region. The inscriptions in question are divided into three thematic groups, each of them being treated in a separate chapter. The first chapter focuses on the acts issued by the Roman authorities, the second one presents 42 military diplomas seen as parts of imperial constitutions, and the third one deals with iura sepulcrorum. Each chapter contains, in a different form, a review of the preceding studies, analysis of the documents typology, contents, historical background, communicative function and linguistic features, the focus being on the observation of the classical language norms - phonetically, morphologically and syntactically, as well as on the semantics of the legal terms. The concluding part summarizes the main observations contained in the three chapters with a focus on the relations between the different groups of texts and proposes some general conclusions. In this way an overall picture of the legal epigraphy in Moesia Inferior is created that also serves as a basis for certain hypotheses regarding the penetration and functioning of Roman law in the region. |
