The dissertation analyzes data collected through The National Representative Epidemiological Study of Common Mental Disorders in Bulgaria It has two objectives: To study prevalence of 12 types of childhood adversities; To assess correlations between adversities and 4 groups of common mental disorders. The study proves that every seventh child in Bulgaria experiences at least one adversity. The reported prevalence of 13.9percent is three times lower then the prevalence estimated in international studies with the same research design (39.1percent). This result does not support Hypothesis 1, which supposed that prevalence of adversities in Bulgaria will be close to the one in other countries. The research hypothesis 2 states that experience of childhood adversities will increase significantly the risk of mental disorders. The findings proved that hypothesis. The hypothesis 3 supposed different degree of risk according to the age when certain adversity is experienced. The data from the study supported that hypothesis. The research hypothesis 4 suggests that the number of adversities experienced by one and the same person is usually more then one, is also proved to be correct. Conclusions. Mental health policies in Bulgaria do not take into account that subjective experience is factor contributing significantly to the health of population. Due to its clinical significance the group of people suffering from mental disorders and childhood adversities requires specific treatment approaches. |
