As an EU member-state, Bulgaria is addressing the priorities for promoting equity and active citizenship by implementing models of preschool education aimed at acquiring key European competences. Within this context, the PhD research presents a model for boosting childrens social responsibility in 5-7-year-old preschool children. The first chapter of the dissertation presents literature review of international and Bulgarian authors, who examined the pedagogical interaction in preschool, the process of social responsibility awareness building and the specifics of educational activities in multicultural environment. Based on the literature review, an authors definition for social responsibility awareness in pre-school is developed. The second chapter of the dissertation presents the methodology and organization of the research. The main method is a pedagogical experiment. It was performed in 10 Bulgarian preschool institutions with 399 5-7-year-old pre-schoolers (204 in the experimental and 195 in the control group). Complimentary research data were collected by conducting structured observations on site; developing social-pedagogical profiles; completing individual expert assessments; and conducting a survey. In the third chapter the results from the data analysis are discussed. The dissertation ends with conclusions and recommendations for the future implementation of the model. The main conclusions are that the experimental model has a positive impact on the development of a system of competences and attitudes representing the social responsibility awareness in pre-school. The model has positive impact in both mono- and multicultural environment and thus, could be applied in both types of pre-school groups.
