The dissertation explores variability and optionality of explication of the aspect-tense markers in Modern Chinese. The analysis is based on an experimental study in four variants that statistically estimate the range of variation between the minimal and the maximal intuitive and conscious usage. Accordingly, conclusions are drawn about the mechanisms of functioning of the optional formatives and the influence of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors on their explication in language. The methods of study are mainly based on functional linguistics and the semantic-pragmatic approach in aspectology. The analysis of the aspect-tense system of Modern Chinese language is in accordance with the two-component theory of aspect (Smith 1997, Xiao & McEnery 2004). The results of the experimental study prove a very high degree of optionality in the explication of the formatives as the variative usage covers more than 80 of the cases of appearance. The range of variation between the minimum regular and the maximum possible use of the marker -le represents a potential increase of 1119 and the respective amplitude of the marker -zhe accounts for 980. The experiment found significant differences between the intuitive and conscious usage, as well as a considerable individual variation and subjective motivation in the manner of explication. The correlational analysis of combinations of semantic, syntactic and textological factors for the usage of the formatives proves that the realization of the aspect-tense forms in speech is motivated to a greater extent by extra-linguistic and pragmatic factors.
