Резюме: The spatial and social importance of mountain areas is the basis of constant investigatory and public interest in the socio-economic processes taking place there, their territorial organization and management. The studied objects are the mountainous areas of: NUTS level 0 at European and national level; LAU level 1 and LAU 2 by empirical study of mountain communities and the mountainous lands of settlements from Pazardzhik region (NUTS 3). Subject of the study is the research of the methodological basis for the definition, typology and characteristics of mountain areas at European and national level, and exploring their options for integrated spatial development on regional and local level in the selected model territory. The aim of the thesis is to examine current trends in socio-economic development of mountain regions, in regional and local aspect and on this basis to suggest possible policy priorities for integrated development of the territory of Pazardzhik. Adapted is the methodology for classification of mountain communities and is applied to model conditions for the Bulgarian territory. Typified are mountain municipalities in Pazardzhik region for the needs of spatial planning and development. Performed is an analysis and evaluation of the potential of mountain areas and are set out guidelines and priorities for integrated development. Proposed is definition of the term of mountainous region and a model policy for integrated development. It outlines the integrated structures (horizontal and vertical clusters) as spatial patterns in the organization of regional and local development of mountain areas. The attached in the survey methodology is used in the learning process.
