The aim of the thesis is systematical description and analysis of the phonetic, morphological and syntactic features of the Greek inscriptions in the churches with mixed inscriptions /i.e. with both Greek and Cyrillic texts/ from 17th century in Bulgaria, and also reconstruction of their writing process. The examined churches are situated mainly in the Western and Northern regions of Bulgaria. Bilingialism, defined as functional, asymmetrical and fictitious, exerts a strong influence on the process of writing and compiling, on certain aspects of the orthography and the thematic range of the Greek inscriptions. The mechanism of writing divides the inscriptions in four distinctive groups: copied inscriptions; inscriptions, written from memory; compiled inscriptions; imitations of texts. The total number of the examined inscriptions is two hundred and twenty-five, one hundred and twenty-one of which are inscriptions in the scrolls of prophets and saints. Each entity in the catalogue is described according to the following parameters: iconographic, epigraphic, grammatical, interpretative, explanatory. The supplement includes a complete photographic documentation of the Greek inscriptions, examined in the second chapter of the research. The model could be used and adapted to other periods and regions of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine Christian art in the Balkans.
