The thesis refers to a specific part of the latest red-figure painted pottery in the traditions of the Athenian workshops – luxury decorative vases with special techniques applied – polychromy and gilded details in added clay. The first chapter– historiography on “Kerch style” in vase-painting – focuses on the essence and the scope of this controversial term. Based on this the second one sets a frame for the analysis of the Apollonian vases: it reviews vases attributed to the leading artists and stylistic groups that are associated with the “Kerch Style”. Some important features in the manner of most distinguished vase-painters of 4th century BC are outlined. Furthermore some corrections in the attributions of already well known vases are suggested. The third chapter comments on the attribution arguments of Apollonian examples. In addition, several new stylistic groups can be distinguished among the smaller and less elaborately decorated lekythoi. The profiling of the vases and their decoration schemes are also considered in a search of the workshop that they come from and a narrow date within 4th century BC. The range of vase-forms and scene subjects give some important aspects of the Apollonian market preferences for luxury items. The research gives the stylistic point of view on the problem of the eventual local production of a part of the “Kerch Style” vases from the necropolis. # |
