The subject of the dissertation is the philosophical term "boundary" in his hermeneutical interpretive function as tool, which can be used within the field of history of philosophy during the study of cultural phenomena and topoi, and the interpretation of specific issues and concepts of the medieval philosophy. The work has two main objectives. The first one is to define the concept of "boundary" and to demonstrate its capacity to work as a hermeneutical tool, which can be used at different levels of historical and philosophical study that would allow consistent analysis, lacking the deficiencies of pure speculative or culturological consideration of one philosophical problem cultural praxis of phenomenon. Second, the study shows, that the philosophical concept of boundary deployed in a certain way and historically contextualized, can work as an identifier of boundary phenomena within a certain cultural context and boundary issues and concepts in the realm of philosophy. On two levels - cultural practices and speculative doctrines - it is demonstrated, that the concept makes it possible to define more precisely various speculative approaches to similar topics by different authors and to compare cultural topoi and mental attitudes. The condition for the successful application of the tool is its contextualisation, which is achieved through historical and philosophical outlining of the limits of its essential and formal validity, on which depends its usage within a single historical era or particular philosophical tradition.
