The purpose of the dissertation e is to reconstruct conceptually the course of the Eastern enlargement, by taking into account the reality of national interests that determine the direction, the speed and the content, as well as the specific nature of the euro-integration process in this phase. In accordance with the indicated purpose, the dissertation analyzes the compromises achieved by the Member States toward the post-communist countries of Eastern Europe as a result of balancing between different national preferences, based on the national interests of the EU countries – geopolitical, economic, normative The presented research results give ground for a conclusion that the nature of the compromise steps wich shape the enlargement policy, reflect the content of the compromises among the divergent national interests of EU countries and respectively, predetermine the compromise nature of the entire process. These compromises determine the form, content and application of the tools of the enlargement policy in each of the phases of the process. Therefore they have a decisive impact on the nature of the Europeanisation of the CEEC. In other words, the unsurmountable reality of the national interests of the countries of the European Union provides the realization of the Eastern enlargement, but at the same time pre-determines its unfinished character – an act of accession is effected, but without the completion of the Europeanisation of the newcomers becoming a fact.
