The dissertation introduces the problematic of the construction of the Thracian heritage in modern Bulgaria. This patrimonial procedure is explored within the entanglement between two parallel perspectives – national and international. In this context, the subject of the study is oriented towards the controversial social relationships between heterogeneous actors who produce the Thracian heritage nowadays. From this point of view, the heritage narrative is seen as an assemblage of many ‘matters of concern’, in the sense of things that engage heterogeneous actors. Particular attention is paid to the search for a recognisable ‘European’ image through the actualisations of ancient legacy and their perceptions in ‘Europe’. For the understanding of this open model of cultural heritage, the dissertation traces the associations, marked both by growing academic studies and museum presentations of the Thracian past, as well as by everyday life and amateur initiatives which approach more and more closely professional activities. These diverse and dispersing ‘places’ of heritage-making are interpreted through a theoretical framework unifying Critical Heritage Studies and the Sociology of Associations. Applying this approach to the observed realities offers an innovative model for the analysis of cultural heritage and its necessary presence in the present.
