The subject is the role of donation for the formation and development of the museum collections in Bulgaria, the enrichment of the museum funds. The study covers the donor tradition in Bulgaria during the various historical periods. Emphasis in the study is the contemporary state of donation in Bulgarian museums. The sources of formation and enrichment of the museum collections, as well as the order of acceptance and registration of donations in the Bulgarian museums according to the current normative regulation are specified. There are opportunities for attracting additional funds from donations in support of the activities of exhibition and popularization of museum collections, restoration and preservation of cultural values, publications, xhibitions. An overview of publications and research on the topic of donation has been made, from the first editions of the early twentieth century to the latest topical publications. The legal regulation of donation in Bulgaria and the state policy on donation in the field of culture are considered. Presented donation campaigns run by museums to enrich collections and raise funds. Other contemporary forms of donation – sponsorship and volunteering in museums are also under consideration. There are funds and foundations supporting projects in the field of cultural heritage and museum activities. There is a place for creating and maintaining the relationship museum – donors; museums – donations – media.
