Traditional folk costumes are the most complete source for disclosure and revelation of the ethnic unity and variety of the traditional Bulgarian culture.
Until the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule the folk costume develops under specific social and material conditions and living standards. While in some areas of the country the garment is the result of the very slow evolution of the costume’s forms and traditions, stemming from the old Slavic or medieval clothing, in other areas the contact with the Turks and the specificity of the century are reflected in the costume.
