Резюме: Today the European Badger (Meles meles L.) is widely distributed predator in Europe and Asia. In Bulgaria badger could be found in deciduous and mixed forests throughout the country. Too little is known about the species because the lack of profound scientifical studies and systematic monitoring. The purpose of this study was to asses the biology and ecology of badgers in Bulgaria. Its paticular aims were to identify the parameters of its home range and the social organisation, analyses of its behaviour (interspecies included), distribution and utilisation of setts, food and foraging behaviour and human attitude towards the species. The field studies were performed within different pattern types of habitats in order specific variables of each of them to be identified. Based on collected data a habitat suitability model for the badger was created. Adequate approaches towards its management in Bulgaria were proposed. In order to achieve these aims radio-telemetry and tracking of the tagged animals, direct observations and camera trapping as well as other methods of collecting precise data were used. Also, information of scat analyses, pattern habitat assessments and interviews with locals were provided. The result of this study is enhancement and deepening the knowledge about the species in Bulgaria throught advanced research methods that will provide comparability with those from other countries.
