Резюме: The dissertation explores the portrait in modernist literature focusing on the novels The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. The first two chapters outline the cultural, historical and theoretical context of the topic by dealing with the autonomous pictorial portrait and the different types of portrait in literature. The remaining three chapters offer a close reading from the point of view of the portrait of the three chosen works; as a result the different manifestations of the portrait in the novels are registered, the functions of those manifestations are pointed out and consequently analysed, the relationships between them are specified and, finally, the set of problems the portraits pose are defined. A conclusion is reached stating that the novels of Wilde, Joyce and Azor?n depict a contradictory, constantly developing and self-reflexive human undividual; this individual rejects external authorities, regards his/her personal freedom in high esteem and is defined accordingly to his/her past. By revealing the capacity of the portrait to pose the outlined set of problems the dissertation labels it an adequate exponent of the modernist worldview.
