The disseration is focused on the study of different attitudes to the image and operations of demons and evil spirits in one of the most popular litterary genres in Byzantium - the hagiology. The First part presents the corpus of sources - biographies of the most important saints, who lived between 565 and 1000 AD, as well as the hagiological schools of this period. In the Second part are being demonstrated the main phases in the evolution of the demon before Christianity (the daimon of Homer, Hesiod, the (neo)pythagorists, the neoplatonists). The Third part is dedicated to the external appearance of demons (the concept of the demonic ugliness, clothing, voice and speech, zoomorph forms). The Fourth part is devoted to the studying of different demonic areas (the air, the Hell), as well as the influence of evil spirits over the earth. Particular stress is laid upon the concept of telonia (the demonic aerial toll-points) and upon the after death journey of the soul.
