Резюме: It is well known that the aerophytic algae grow on different substrata in an aereal environment and play a significant role as producers in the land ecosystems, however their taxonomy and biogeographical distribution are still not deeply investigated. That is valid even more for the litophytic algae - epi- and endolytes, which live either on the surface or in the inner side of rocks and stones. At present times the aerophytic algoflora of Bulgaria is remarkably poorly known which led to define it as one of the blank spots of the country while the area of Belogradchishki skali is indeed completely unexplored. The main purpose of the thesis is to determine and explore the taxonomical composition of the aerophytic algoflora of the rock phenomenon and natural landmark Belogradchishki skali with special attention on the epi- and endolytes. Upon completing the PhD research the importance of the cultivation of algae was proved for complete and more accurate taxonomical data. A total of 96 species of 47 genera were determined, out of which 21 species and 10 genera were described for first time for the territory of Bulgaria. Some of the taxa were discovered in a habitat that differentiate from the commonly known and that made possible to attribute them to distinct ecological subgroups. It was described a new direct method for collection of aerophytic algae that enhances the cultivation and its efficacy was successfully tested. Additionally, the rocks age and chemical composition were determined via petrographic analysis.
