The Ukrainian language situation during the 20th and in the beginning of the 21st century is interesting and complex due to the wide variety of linguistic and ethnic problems, which it comprises of. Although the language and the ethnic sphere of social life are not one and the same thing, there are some points in which they merge and in these points severe social and political problems emerge. This research focuses on the the inter-language relations, which emerge today in Ukraine. That is why the main object of this research is the language situation in Ukraine. The subject of the research is the Russian - Ukrainian linguistic dualism and the emerging as a result of it socio-linguistic phenomena. A review of the socio-linguistic literature has been made and the linguistic situation in Ukraine has been analysed using the well-known theoretical formulas.The joint use of languages in different spheres of social life and the factors which strongly influence the choice of language have been presented and analysed. An attempt to analyse the language phenomenon "surzhik" and to compare it to other non-normative forms of the use of language has been made. |
