Резюме: The aim of the work is the establishment of a common core of lexis of the Germanic languages and the study of the Scandinavian borrowings, which entered the English language. The object of study is the vocabulary, and the subject is the paths for entry of Scandinavian borrowings in the English language, and the evolution of their meaning. The use of the Scandinavian prototypes is illustrated in quotations from the Old Icelandic sagas and other Old Scandinavian works. The methods used are: The method of lexicostatistics and computer lexicography and the Method of the seven sieves from the Eurocom project, in particular the second sieve, which studies the kernel vocabulary by formally comparing the lexicons of eight languages from the Germanic group. The Bulgarian translations are added, to indicate the semantic discrepancies within the same word that frequently occur with closely related languages. A list of 2,200 words by Fr. Bodmer was used as a basis, published in his work "The Loom of Language". The main criterion of the seven sieves method is the formal overlapping of the lexical units The approach of the study is synchronically- diachronic. As a result, a kernel of 491 words has been established, comprising the core vocabulary of the Germanic language group, which is a contribution to the Eurocomgerm project, as well as a table of 161 words of Scandinavian origin in modern English has been presented. Through computer content analysis the use of Scandinavian borrowings has been illustrated in a few basic medieval literary works. The Scandinavian borrowings have been examined in context, indicative of translation practices in England in the 19th century. In the fifth chapter a semantic analysis of the modern uses of ten key borrowings has been offered.
