Резюме: This study focuses on the relationship between emotive expressive means and gender. It aims to establish whether the employment of affective expressive means could index the gender category in the process of real-life communication and thus serve as a useful tool in constructing a feminine or masculine identity. The corpus of data which is explored in the present investigation consists of comments posted on the walls of two song contests in the Facebook social network: The Voice of Bulgaria 2011 and The X Factor UK 2011. The English and Bulgarian posts are analyzed within a social constructionist framework and the theoretical approach which is followed combines an ethnographic perspective with a stance typical of the third wave of variationist sociolinguistics. The methodological approach of this dissertation is mixed: it draws upon the act of blending qualitative and quantitative methods. The analysis of the collected corpus of comments clearly shows that emotive expressive means could play a vital role in real-life gender identity construction processes. Within the boundaries of the Facebook groups under study both the women and men engage in stereotypically feminine communicative practices (which involve the expression of emotions), but apply these shared strategies in a markedly divergent manner: the womens behaviour is more extreme, the mens more restrained. In both Facebook groups gender is indexed through the womens and mens different forms of participation in the communicative practices characteristic of the group to which they belong.
