The dissertation considered lexical phenomena is motivated. The first chapiter presents: 1) relevant litterature about the concept of attitude in the social psychology; 2) approaches to studying language attitudes; 3) Bulgarian studies. The second chapiter presents the research design of the study. Participants (N = 677) evaluated the appropriateness as well as the speakers in four texts, each containing expressions belonging to one of the investigated lexical phenomena in eight communicative situations. Gender of the speaker was manipulated. The third chapiter presents the findings and discussion. Participants gender had an effect on the evaluation of the appropriateness and of the speaker who uses slangisms and both types of vulgarisms. Women disliked them more than men did. The speakers gender had an effect on evaluation only when the speaker used professional vocabulary: Men were evaluated higher than women. People living in big cities and students disliked speakers who use slangisms and both types of vulgarisms more than those living in small towns and adults did. The professional vocabulary has high prestige and speakers using it were highest evaluated. The forth chapiter presents the conclusions of the study. |
