The subject of this thesis is the chaplain s ministry of the Church, and particularly ministry in places of detention (prisons, open prisons, remand centers, and institutions for juvenile offenders). Also examined is the probation system - a fairly new alternative to imprisonment, which has yet to attract much spiritual attention from the Church. The objects of study are the different types of places of detention, the peculiarities of the different regimes in prisons, types of inmates and recommended pastoral approaches to them, and the moral, intellectual and psychological demands on clergy and volunteers willing to serve in penitentiary institutions. The specifics of the ministry of the Church in penitentiary establishments require this study to be divided into four chapters, dealing with guidelines in this area. The present study is a detailed analysis of the principles, methods and approaches of pastoral soul-care regarding prisoners and other individuals with deviant behaviour. So far this is the only study ever of that kind about the prisoners and the spiritual-pastoral and methodological approaches of this special ministry of the Church. Highlighted are some specific moments in organising a parish in places of deprivation of liberty, construction and equipment of the prison church, as well as the specifics of worship and especially of the sacraments of Repentance and Eucharist. Consideration is given to the author s interpretation of methods and means of pastoral impact on different types of prisoners and persons sentenced to probation. The ministry of the Church in places of deprivation of liberty has a God-given character. Visiting prisoners and displaying empathy and mercy to them, we serve Christ Himself. The prison ministry of the Church is essentially and predominantly spiritual in nature, and should not focus only on its social aspect. The purpose of the Christian presence in prison is the salvation of the soul of the one who has gone astray (the prodigal). Material assistance to detainees should not be seen as an end in itself; it makes sense only when it supports the main objective - saving the soul. |
