The thesis is focused on the notions of image, similarity and symbol in the writings of the late medieval philosopher and orator Nicholas of Cusa. Chapter one attempts to reconstruct key points of a historical systematization of the notions of image, similarity and symbol. Object of an analysis here are ancient and medieval texts with reference to contemporary theories on these three phenomena. Chapter two reconstructs two particular theological and philosophical concepts of image, representative for the medieval time period - the image as an expression added to the idea of similarity, and the image as unity with regard to quality and quantity. It includes two additional segments about two characteristic images in Cusas writings - the "living image" and the image on the coin. Chapter three is focused on the central author of the thesis - it studies the epistemological aspect of the image and presents the theory of knowledge put forward by Cusa himself. In this perspective becomes clear the way in which image and similarity function as symbols in the broad horizon of knowledge of the truth. The images of the gemstones diamond and beryl are analyzed. This interpretation leads to the idea of a link between image and transparence (the diaphanon), which is applied to 15th century visual culture. Chapter four follows some aspects of the premodern theory of sight and the diaphanon. The conclusion relates the reconstructed notions with the poetical tradition of the 15th century. |
