Резюме: In the dissertation is discussed the reading process in its neurophysiologic, cognitive and psycholinguistic facets, the formation of reading efficiency as a cognitive skill and the role of typefaces in the acquisition of reading literacy in preschool and primary school children. Some of the difficulties in the process of acquisition of reading literacy are examined. The paper discusses the attempts of the researchers to solve the problems of the dyslexics and to answer their specific needs that require the design of special typefaces for reading. The dissertation investigates also the tendencies of the 20th century Bulgarian typographic practices, applied in the primers and 1st grade readers, which have been published during the years 1900 - 2014. A graphic analysis of the typographic design and the typeface design of Bulgarian textbooks in reading literacy for children is done and presented in the paper.
