The doctoral dissertation has two research objectives. The first objective is to identify differences between men and women in relation to: 1) entrepreneurial intentions; 2) risk behaviour; and 3) characteristics and performance of female and male-owned businesses. The second objective is to identify the reason for the observed differences between men and women in entrepreneurial intentions, risk behaviour and orhanizational performance. The first chapter of the dosctoral dissertation presents the research context and theoretical framework of the study. The second chapter presents conceptual model of gender differences in entrepreneurial intentions. The presented conceptual model is tested in a sample of Bulgarian university students. The third chapter reveals the similarities and differences between female and male entrepreneurs and thir businesses in a transition context and discusses the reasons for the observed differences drawing upon institutional theory and feminist theory. The forth chapter contains a conceptual model of differences in organizational performance between female and male-owned businesses. The presented conceptual model is tested in a sample of 501 Bulgarian enterprises. The fifth chapter presents a conceptual model of gender differences in risk behaviour, risk perceptions, and risk propensity of entrepreneurs. The model is tested in a sample of 382 entrepreneurs.
