This doctoral dissertation compares usages of the admirative in Bulgarian and Albanian in order to define the semantic invariant of the Albanian admirative (menyra habitore). Considering that the categories of evidentiality and the admirative exist in Turkish, this third language has also been included in the present analysis to further highlight the similarities and differences between the admirative in Bulgarian and Albanian. The admirative in Bulgarian and Albanian is a grammatical way of expressing the speakers surprise, astonishment, wonder, or irony of a reported fact. The term menyra habitore in the Albanian grammatical tradition is used to indicate a category which has not only admirative, but also inferential, dubitative, renarrative, etc. usages. It is argued that while the Bulgarian admirative is an emotional-expressive contextual usage of the inferential, the Albanian admirative (menyra habitore) can be considered as mediative. The focal point of this analysis is that thorough research of the contemporary condition of the admirative in Bulgarian and Albanian can only be achieved through combination of two approaches: (1) historical review of the development of its genesis and (2) detailed analysis of the usages of the admirative in the contemporary language.
