The proposed dissertation thesis aims at revealing and analyzing the possibilities of unconventional means of impact in mentally retarded children in the conditions of daily training center as a factor for increasing the level of cognitive functioning and for developing identity and social behavior. The thesis presents the possibilities of non-traditional pedagogical approaches and development strategies related to overcoming the mentioned problem, as well as the mechanisms of such special pedagogical interaction. The source of the empirical material is the study conducted by the author - a training experiment, as well as surveys conducted with specialists and parents of mentally retarded children. The reported positive special pedagogical impacts in children with special needs allow activities such as Montessori therapy, art therapy, play-therapy, music therapy and application to be proposed as an alternative approach to developing basic social competencies for Day Center service users. The results which were obtained determine the answer, which is strictly related to the main question of the research: The strategies for development for mentally retarded children in the conditions of the day center’s area have the potential for positive special pedagogical impact on the social skills and competencies of pupils with special educational needs. We certainly believe that this is an enrichment of the special education with a scientifical and theoretical and also practical application.
