The present dissertation is the first synchronic contrastive study dedicated to the English absolute construction (AC) and its Bulgarian functional equivalents (FEs). The major goals of the research are: 1) To find, analyze and describe the FEs of the English AC in Bulgarian. 2) To provide a general overview and a detailed classification of the AC in Modern English. To achieve these goals, a number of research tasks have been completed, and as a result the following contributions have been made: • two representative corpora – English and English-Bulgarian – have been collected for the research purposes of the dissertation, and two concordances have been constructed – of the English ACs by structural type and of the English ACs and their Bulgarian FEs by author; • a frequency profile of the ACs in Modern English has been made based on their distribution across various types of discourse; • an attempt has been made to clarify the syntactic function of some special cases of ACs resembling attributive appositive relations; • certain criteria for distinguishing the AC from other similar constructions in English have been offered, as well as some criteria in Bulgarian for distinguishing the adverbial modifier of manner from the detached attribute, on the one hand, and the subject complement, on the other; • the Bulgarian FEs of the English ACs have been identified, analysed and systematized, and as a result the dominant Bulgarian FE of the English AC has been established.
