The dissertation aims to reveal the genesis of nationalism and populism in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the context of the three particular cases - Bulgaria, Poland and Serbia. Another goal is to analyze and conceptualize the emerging populism profiles in the same region. Last but not least, the text aims to compare the new types of nationalism and populism in CEE - on the base of the three case studies and to draw conclusions on the dynamics in the development of these important ideological mechanisms for political mobilization in our time. In other words, the dissertation answers these questions: How does nationalism and populism fit into the transitions to democracy in Poland, Serbia and Bulgaria? What are its origins and what role it plays in the formation of post-communist political reality? What are the similarities and the differences in the three countries? Our assumption is that nationalism and populism in CEE accompanies the political existence of the transition from its very first days, and even precedes it. One of the strongest aspects of the text is the integration of theories of nationalism and populism into theories of democratization. This integration is two-tier, because has been implemented first on a theoretical level, and then occurs within specific case studies. This dissertation is part of the collaborative efforts of the collegial community to debate concepts, theories and practices of nationalism and populism in a contemporary context.
