A major feature of the spatial development in Bulgaria is the monocentricity, which is expressed in the dominant position of Sofia in relation to the other regional centers. Characteristics of the presented three models in the role of different scenarios for the spatial development of the country: First model: Spatial development of the example of Sliven and Nova Zagora. Depressive development of the town of Sliven – deteriorated demographic and economic indicators and region-forming functions, which are inconsistent with its development potential. Second model: Spatial development of the example of Plovdiv and Asenovgrad. The spatial development of the district is related to the enormous gravity of Plovdiv in relation to the other municipal centers. Spatial development of the area is a scale model of the monocentric development of Sofia. Third model: Spatial development of the example of Sofia and the other regional centers in the Southwestern region (NUTS 2). It confirms the dominant role of Sofia in the spatial development of the region and Bulgaria as a whole. A major feature of the spatial development of the Bulgarian districts is related to the existence of one settlement (the district center), which dominates the whole area. To a certain extent, a second settlement can be considered as a secondary district center, and a third one with a region-forming role in district is missing. The small region-forming functions of a large part of the municipal centers in the districts prove that they do not fulfill the role assigned to them in the sense of the developed normative framework for the development of a balanced polycentric network of centers on the territory of the country.
