On the territory of Bulgaria, to the south of the front of the Balkanides, several dozen extensional basins are formed within the range of the orogene. In the scheme of tectonic division of Bulgaria by J. Ivanov (1988, 1998, 2017) they are separated as a individual unit - "Post-compressional, superimposed, neogen-quaternary basins". The survey area covers about 250 km2 and includes four neotectonic basins – Botevgrad basin, Zlatitsa basin, Kamartsi basin and Etropole basin, located on External and Intermediate zones of the Balkanide orogen (in the sense of J. Ivanov, 1988, 1998, 2017), and on or near to some of the most important tectonic boundaries on the territory of Bulgaria. Each of these basins differs in their tectonic position, proximity to major faults, shape, size, substrate characteristics, thickness and composition of sedimentary fill, etc. This was also one of the reasons for choosing the subject of my doctoral thesis research - to study several different basins using a modern complex methodology including: geological evolution of the area; characterization of the main fault structures in it; lithological (lithostragraphic) characterization of the substrate; characterization of the sediment filling; restoration of the stages of the basin evolution; morphometric characterization of the drainage systems for the establishment of neotectonic and modern processes; and identification and characterization of potential areas endangered by certain types of natural risk processes.
