The current trends in the development of the institute in the European countries, and their projections on the model of local self-government in Bulgaria are reported. The thesis is based on a historical overview and comparative legal analysis, taking into consideration the gradually emerging international democratic standards for the operation of the modern local self-government. Chapter I of the dissertation studies the theoretical and historical legal foundations of the Bulgarian local self-government on terms of unitary state and parliamentary government. Chapter II presents and analyzes the basic models of the local government in Europe. The dissertation also examines the administrative-territorial structure of the Republic of Bulgaria, the authorities of the local self-governments in terms of their relationships with other state institutions, as well as the participation of citizens in the administration of the territorial units. Chapter III views the local self-government as part of the European development and integration. Proposals are formulated on the basis of the theoretical analysis, de lege ferenda, in order to improve the Bulgarian local self-government model in the context of the relationship between self-governing bodies and national political institutions.
