The goal of this dissertation is to prove that illegal migration flows pose a tangible threat to the Republic of Bulgaria’s national security. Therefore, the scale of human flows during the 2015 European Migrant Crisis period, their main itineraries, and their starting and end points have been studied. Their composition has been analyzed based on ethnic origin, sex and age, as well as the direction in which they are moving. In its course, not only does it analyze the measures Bulgaria undertook to manage the migration pressure, but also makes a parallel with similar policies implemented by other EU member states. New migration flow scenarios have been developed in order to determine the potential results of measures already in place. The legislation regulating the migrants’ status has been analyzed and summarized. Processed statistical data sourced from state authorities on the nationalities in the human flows pressuring Bulgaria’s borders has been enclosed. The comparative historical research method has been used to trace Bulgaria’s and European countries’ past experience in dealing with different migration waves that impacted the region’s fate on a massive scale. This dissertation provides a detailed analysis of the expenses necessary to build a defensive installation on Bulgaria’s border with Turkey, and develops a defensive installation realization model similar to the one in Hungary, but aligned with Bulgaria’s capabilities.
