The dissertation study is divided into three parts: theoretical, empirical and practical implementation. The object of the study is the empathy in social work, and the subject is the dynamics of the social worker's empathy in the process of social case work, the term “dynamics” being understood as the influences on empathy and its changes. The aim of the study is to establish the dynamic changes in the empathy of the social worker in social case work. In the research hypothesis it is assumed that the social worker's empathy in the case work is modified under the influence of specific conditions related to: the phase of work on the case; client’s behaviour and his subjective perception from the social worker; the workload of the social worker; satisfaction with supervision; symptoms of burnout and empathic fatigue; empathic satisfaction; the personality of the social worker; the level of helping relationships; professional boundaries; the usage of empathic techniques; the usege of professional empathy. The survey included 158 social workers and other helping professionals working on individual cases. The results show a tendency to decreasing of empathy as the phase of the case progresses, as well as the conditions under which the social workers' empathy increases or decreases. A model of empathy dynamics, a training model for increasing empathy, and empirical-centered supervision guidelines were developed.
