The representation/exposure focuses on functional literacy in the light of reading, processing and using of information from written texts in order to solve life-case studies. The ability to rationalize and process information from written sources varied in form and content is comprehended as a meta skill an individual needs to deal with issues from different fields of human activity successfully. In its attempt to provide reasoned presentation of functional literacy as a component of both functional competence and communicative competence, the dissertation propones its own theoretical model which includes skills and competences set in a hierarchical order, that let students use practically knowledge and experiences obtained at school in a variety of situations, and that assure their full participation in the economical, political and cultural life of the modern European society. In accordance with the objectives and targets to resolve, the study provides a methodical version of activities to develop reading skills at junior high school stage and the two educanional stages of the high shool as well.
