Our dissertation offers a new perspective on the phenomena of immigration and integration, through the prism of different integration models (assimilation, multicultural and acculturation), in a national context (the case of the Netherlands), and the most common immigration theories (by Robert Park, Milton Gordon, and Hartmut Esser). We examine the European immigration and integration policies and more in particular the Dutch integration policy and the models it uses, but mainly focus on the policy of Dutch public libraries to create services for immigrants that help them integrate into Dutch society. The dissertation provides a thorough overview of the Netherlands immigration and integration policy, analyzing the legal framework (“Aliens Act” (1975, 2000), “Civic Integration Act” (1998, 2006, 2012, 2013) and the “Civic Integration Abroad Act” (2006), and a specially designed government report (Commission Report Block, 2004), that looks back on the integration processes in the Netherlands from 1974 to 2004. We analyze and evaluate the work with immigrants in the public libraries in the Netherlands and provide a comparative overview of the immigration services of other leading public libraries from EU countries, relating them to the changes in the Dutch government's policy in this direction. We present, summarize and analyze five empirical studies that allow us to formulate and propose solutions for improving services for the integration of immigrants in the Netherlands.
