The dissertation thesis examines a significant period of development of three of the most interesting East European capitals – Sofia, Bucharest and Bratislava. Several stages of the historical development of the three cities have been explored, but the focus of the dissertation falls within the period after 1989. As a result of the political and economic transformations, significant spatial, urban, architectural and functional changes occurred in the three cities. In the years before 1989, the study focused on analyzing and describing the spatial and infrastructural development of the three cities, thus revealing the overall picture of their state. The political and economic changes in Eastern Europe in 1989 significantly transformed the urban fabric, the architectural appearance, the cultural and living environment, the economic profile and the infrastructure of Sofia, Bucharest and Bratislava. By using GIS (the Modelbuilder application), Urban Atlas project database and subsequent data processing, the main classes of land cover in the functional urban areas (FUAs) of the three cities have been created. The results reveal the dynamics of the functional transformations that occurred in the post-socialist period of development of the three European capitals.
