This PhD thesis is focused on Architecture Description Languages and their use. Despite the advantages they can offer, their use is still quite limited. This is, mainly, due to two reasons: their, usually, problematic (for developers) high degree of formality in their syntax and their issues when it comes to expressing dynamic architectures. The goal of this thesis is to create a new Architecture Description Language (ADL), named jADL, which would provide the means and language constructs to formally describe dynamic and mobile software architectures with a relatively simple syntax, which will help towards the promotion of ADLs in further use outside out of academia. Additionally, an extension to jADL is created, called μσADL, for the description of software architectures that follow the microservices architectural style. A process is, also, presented concerning the conversion of BPMN models to jADL models. Starting from a BPMN model we reach to a jADL specification, which can help towards the promotion of the use of ADLs, since BPMN are widely used in practice. Finally, a tool was designed, consisting of a textual editor and a translator, to support and ease the use of jADL.
