This thesis looks into a subject from the field of etymology, and namely, the semantic reconstruction of the names of the words for joy, anger, fear, sadness and shame in Balkan languages. It aims to (i) find similarities and differences in the development of the names for the basic emotions, as well as to (ii) bring out, systematize and describe the basic conceptual metaphors for joy, anger, fear and sadness in the Bulgarian, Romanian, Albanian and Greek languages. The study deals with a wide variety of lexemes from all Balkan languages (over 150). It includes examples from the Slavic, Romance and Indo-European languages. It is extremely useful in its role in the Albanian language, because a comprehensive development on the subject has not been made, to date. This thesis uses the historical and etymological method combined with the conceptual metaphor theory. The combination of the two methods allows for a more comprehensive insight into the phonetic and semantic appearance of the lexemes analysed in the text. In addition to the main emotional Balkan lexemes, lexemes with colloquial use, which are typical of the folk psychology of the Balkan peoples, were analysed in the text. The etymological analysis of lexemes in the text was made using the principles of scientific etymology. Semantic reconstruction was also performed for each of the lexemes in the text. The tables at the end of each chapter summarize the meaning of the words naming emotions in the Bulgarian, Romanian, Albanian and Greek languages. Comparative tables were prepared to demonstrate similarities and differences in the semantic development of the main Balkan emotional lexemes. On the basis of the data from these tables, common models of semantic development were drawn, as well as conclusions about the proximity between the different Balkan languages.
