The research analyses and proposes practical solution to problems, related with professional development in the field of cultural heritage. The loss of professional capacity in the institution, bound to safeguard and socialise cultural values, is critical. It occurs together with raised public interest and expectations for high quality achievements in the field; growing mismatch between the learning results of formal education and real needs of professional activities; growing problem with finding qualified specialists for working at museums, libraries and archives; emerging of new highly specialised professions in the cultural heritage field. The research outlines the crossing points between deficiencies and needs of professional development and validation of knowledge, skills and competences, gained in the course of non-formal learning of professionals. The key takeaways are applicable to the whole variety of cultural values. Practical recommendations are suggested, aiming at the establishment of sustainable and holistic system of professional development, related to real-life needs and supported by adequate normative framework. The main objective is to safeguard cultural heritage in the best possible way to serve public interest.
