"Body and Death in the Works of Maria Teresa Horta, Helia Correia and Ines Pedrosa" is a dissertation in the field of the contemporary Portuguese literature. The project addresses the issue of women's authorship by focusing on the topic of death and the conceptual problem of the human body and its presence and representation in the literary text. The study is comparative and explores the philosophical issue of death and the problem of the social position and functionality of the human body, and in particular the female body, in the works of three contemporary Portuguese authors. The comparative analysis is carried out on a selected corpus of literary texts, the main aims in literary terms being to discuss how body and death are conceived and how the two concepts are structured in the literary text; using the sociocultural point of view the analysis shows the ways in which women are present in public tissue through their bodies. The tasks within these objectives are to find answers to the questions about the functionality of the body and death in the literary text in terms of idea and form, and to underline their contribution to reconsider the woman's social participation. Structurally, the dissertation is organised into five parts – an introduction, three main chapters and a conclusion – followed by several illustrative annexes and a list of used literature. Chapter one sets out the theoretical framework of labor by drawing the directions in which it was subsequently developed. The two analytical parts have two separate but interrelated directions of action – the second chapter discusses body and death from literary point of view in the works with female authorship, while the third chapter uses the literature’s dual function of mirror reflecting but also producing a new content in order to consider the issues in sociological terms. |
