In the dissertation are analyzed the media coverage approaches of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries on the websites of the Bulgarian National Radio, Deutsche Welle and the BBC. An attempt is made to chronologically follow in an almost 20-year period of time (from 1999 to June 2018) the media publications about events from key stages of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the six countries. The research period is framed by two important occurrences: from the launching of the EU’s Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP) in 1999 to the end of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. In the dissertation are analyzed theoretical concepts dedicated to previous EU’s and NATO’s enlargements and scientific sources analyzing the integration process of the Western Balkan countries and the policies of the EU and NATO towards the region. A comparison is made between the conclusions in the used scientific literature and the points of view, opinions, facts and statements presented in the three media. The content analysis of the websites of the three media tries to answer the questions which events of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries are reported and whether the media coverage is guided by the political agenda of the EU and NATO. For the purposes of the theoretical framework and the empirical research are conducted interviews with former politicians who held government positions in Serbia and Kosovo in the recent past. |
